Most guides to tiger safari cost in India give you a single headline number, which rarely survives contact with a real itinerary. In reality, the price of a tiger safari depends on how many parks you visit, where you sleep, whether you share your jeep, which zones you drive and how many people you travel with.
This guide uses the live prices of every India tiger safari on FaunaExplore to show where the money goes and what it buys.
How much does a tiger safari in India cost?
- Tour price: our India tiger safaris range from $3,850 to $7,300 per person, for 7 to 18 days. International flights are extra.
- Per day on the ground: roughly $350 to $700 per person, depending on trip style.
- What moves the price most: number of parks and drives, lodge tier, private vs shared jeep, zone permits and group size.
- Usually included: lodges, meals, guided drives, park permits and transfers, and on some tours domestic flights.
- Usually extra: international flights, visa, tips, travel insurance and drinks.
- Realistic all-in budget: about $4,700 to $9,500 per person, including flights from Europe or North America.
Please keep in mind that sightings are never guaranteed at any price. What a higher budget actually buys is more drives, better zone access and more flexibility, which all improve your odds without promising a tiger. Note that a cheaper trip is not always cheaper per day. The 12-day walking safari works out at about $350 per day, while the 7-day Ranthambore safari is closer to $700 per day. Longer trips spread fixed costs, such as arrival nights and transfers, across more days in the parks.
What drives the price of a tiger safari in India
Our tours range from $3,850 to $7,300 per person. That spread comes down to five factors.
Number of parks and how you travel between them
Each extra park adds a transfer day, often a long road journey or a domestic flight. A single-park trip has the lowest logistics cost but leaves you exposed to a quiet week or a weak zone allocation. Two- and three-park circuits cost more, but they spread your chances.
That is why most of our central India tours visit two or three reserves, typically starting from Nagpur or Jabalpur. Our best tiger safari in India guide explains which parks combine well.
Lodge tier
Accommodation near the parks ranges from simple forest rest houses to luxury jungle lodges with private plunge pools. On our tours, the main split is between mid-range lodges, as on the Bandhavgarh & Kanha safari, and luxury lodges on most of the multi-park circuits.
A better lodge improves comfort, food and rest between early starts. However, it doesn’t improve your chances of seeing a tiger, so it is the first place to save if budget matters.

Private Gypsy vs shared seat vs canter
In central Indian reserves, you drive in one of three ways:
- Canter: an open bus seating around 20. It is the cheapest option by far, but it is noisy, slow to reposition and gives you no say in where it stops.
- Shared Gypsy: you buy individual seats in a six-seat open jeep and share it with other travellers.
- Private Gypsy: the whole jeep is booked for your group, with your own naturalist.
A private Gypsy safari costs more per person, especially for couples, because you carry the full vehicle permit, jeep hire and guide fee yourselves. What you get is control. You choose how long to wait at a waterhole, which side of the jeep has the light, and whether to stay with a tigress or move on. For photographers and anyone serious about sightings, it is the single most valuable upgrade. Most of our luxury tours, including Tiger Trail India, are private.
Zones, permits and booking timing
Every drive needs a permit for one zone, one session and one vehicle. Popular zones such as Tala in Bandhavgarh or the Kanha zone of Kanha National Park sell out quickly for peak dates. Weekend permits cost more than weekday ones in both Madhya Pradesh and Tadoba. Full-day permits, which let a jeep stay inside the park from dawn to dusk, are a premium product that can cost several hundred dollars per vehicle. A good operator books the zones where tigers are currently active, and that judgement is a large part of what you pay for.
Group size
Because jeeps, guides and transfers are priced per vehicle, the per-person cost falls as the group grows. On Tiger Trail India, the price is $4,600 per person for two, $4,100 for four and $3,850 for six. A couple pays about 19% more per head than a group of six for the same trip.
Jeep safari permit fees explained
Permits in India are issued by each state forest department, not by tour operators. In Madhya Pradesh, which covers Bandhavgarh, Kanha, Pench and Satpura, they are sold on the MP Forest online booking portal. Tadoba permits are sold through the official Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve booking site. Both open about 120 days ahead.
A core-zone drive in Madhya Pradesh has three parts:
- Vehicle entry permit
- Gypsy hire
- Mandatory forest guide
In October 2025, Madhya Pradesh raised these fees by about 10%. The entry permit for a vehicle of up to six is now about ₹2,640 on weekdays and ₹3,300 at weekends, and Gypsy hire is up to ₹3,500 per round. Taken together, a core-zone jeep in Kanha, Bandhavgarh or Pench usually comes to about ₹7,500–10,500 per drive, or roughly $80–110.
Tadoba safari costs vary more. Weekend and early-booked core permits cost far more than weekday ones, and recent reports put a core-zone jeep at about ₹5,800–12,800 per drive, or roughly $60–135. Prices change most seasons, so check the official portals for current rates.
Spread across six people, permits are a small part of a safari budget. A tour that includes ten drives in a private jeep for two people is a different calculation, which is why group size matters so much.

What’s included in a tiger safari package (and what isn't)
Inclusions vary by tour, so it is worth comparing them line by line. Two examples show the range:
- Tiger Trail India (luxury, private): transfers, accommodation, all meals, 9 guided safaris in selected zones with a naturalist, guide and driver, all park entry fees and permits, domestic flights from Delhi to Nagpur, and taxes. Excluded: international flights, tips, insurance and personal extras.
- Bandhavgarh & Kanha Tiger Safari (mid-range, small shared group): return flights between Delhi and Jabalpur, road transfers, lodge accommodation, meals, 11 game drives, a photographic guide, park fees and permits, and taxes. Excluded: drinks, international flights, visa, insurance and tips.
The questions to ask of any tour are simple:
- How many drives are included?
- Are they private or shared?
- Are permits and domestic flights included?
A cheaper tour with six shared drives is not better value than a slightly dearer one with ten private drives.
Can you do a tiger safari cheaper on your own?
Yes, you can. Permits themselves are not expensive, and budget lodges exist near every park. But a self-planned trip means booking the right zones the moment they open, arranging transfers between remote parks and finding a strong naturalist on your own.
And for a first trip, these are exactly the things that decide whether the money is well spent. Most of what a tour costs beyond the raw permits pays for zone strategy, logistics and guiding.
How to get more for your tiger safari budget
- Travel as a group of four to six. This is the biggest single saving on private tours.
- Put drives before lodges. Ten drives from a mid-range lodge beat six from a luxury one if tigers are the goal.
- Book early. Permits open about 120 days ahead, and the best zones go first.
- Favour weekday drives. Permits are cheaper and parks are quieter, especially Tadoba.
- Think about timing. There’s a trade-off between peak-season sightings and cooler, quieter months.
- Choose length over extras. More days in the parks improve your odds more than any upgrade.
Frequently asked questions
How much does a tiger safari in India cost per person?
Our India tiger safaris range from $3,850 to $7,300 per person for 7 to 18 days on the ground. With international flights, visa, tips and insurance, a realistic total is about $4,700 to $9,500 per person.
Are park fees included in the tour price?
On most organised tours, yes. Park entry, jeep permits and guide fees are usually built into the price, and the operator books the permits for you. Check each tour's inclusions, especially for full-day safaris or extra drives, which can be charged separately.
Is a private jeep worth the extra cost?
For most serious wildlife travellers, yes. A private Gypsy lets your naturalist decide where to wait and when to move, with no compromise with other passengers. It costs most for couples and least per person for groups of four to six.
How much should I tip on a tiger safari?
Plan for about $10–20 per person per day. A common guideline is around ₹500 for the naturalist, ₹300 for the forest guide and ₹500 for the driver per drive, per jeep, plus something for lodge staff. Tips are not included in tour prices.
Is a tiger safari cheaper at certain times of year?
Tour prices change less with the season than you might expect. Our Tiger Trail India rates, for example, are the same from October to May. The bigger savings come from weekday permits and quieter zones. Parks close their core zones from roughly July to September for the monsoon.
Is Ranthambore cheaper than central India?
Not necessarily. Our 7-day Ranthambore safari starts at $4,950, which is more per day than most of our central India circuits. Ranthambore is convenient from Jaipur and the Golden Triangle, but central India's reserves usually give better value per drive.
Plan your tiger safari budget
The best-value tiger safari is not the cheapest one. It’s the one that puts you in the right zones for enough drives, at a price that fits your plans. Compare all our tiger safari tours, read our tiger safari overview or explore wider wildlife travel in India.
