What is a black leopard?

A black leopard is a melanistic variation of the African leopard, meaning it has an increased amount of dark pigmentation. Often referred to as a "black panther," this rare genetic trait gives the leopard its distinctive dark appearance.

Despite appearing completely black, the animal's rosette patterns are still visible under certain lighting conditions.

Black leopards are extremely rare in the wild, which is why sightings are considered exceptional.

Laikipia plateau — river, savanna and camp in Kenya

Black leopard sightings are incredibly rare across Africa, but Kenya's Laikipia region has become one of the few places where they have been reliably observed.

Laikipia offers a unique combination of open landscapes and conservation areas, making it one of the best locations in the world for tracking elusive predators.

Meet Giza — Laikipia's black leopard

Giza is one of the most well-known black leopards in Laikipia and a key reason why this region has become globally recognized for rare sightings.

First documented in the area several years ago, she quickly became a subject of interest among guides, photographers, and wildlife enthusiasts due to the rarity of melanistic leopards in Africa.

Today, Giza represents one of the few real opportunities to see a black leopard in the wild — not as a guarantee, but as a realistic possibility when spending multiple days in the right area.

Her presence is one of the main reasons why Laikipia has become a destination specifically for black leopard tracking, attracting travelers looking for something far beyond a traditional safari.

How a black leopard safari works

Black leopard safaris in Laikipia are built around expert tracking and multiple game drives over several days.

Guides use local knowledge and tracking techniques to increase the chances of sightings, focusing on areas where the black leopard has been seen before.

Unlike standard safaris, these itineraries are specifically designed to maximize time in key areas, which is why most trips require a minimum of 4–5 days.

Expert insight from the field

Giza was born to a normally coloured mother near the Laikipia camp and, from a very young age, became used to vehicles as her mother was also calm around them.

Now that Giza is an adult, she shows no fear of vehicles. During sightings, she may look at them, but her path is not altered. Sometimes she walks right past, sometimes even underneath, making eye contact with guests as she moves.

Only camp vehicles are permitted in this conservancy, and usually no more than three are present at a time. This controlled environment ensures she is never stressed or overwhelmed, unlike in busier parks.

Respect is always given to Giza first. If there is any sign of discomfort, the sighting is ended immediately. Night drives also end early, giving her uninterrupted time to hunt.

What are the chances of seeing a black leopard?

Black leopard sightings are never guaranteed, as these animals are rare and elusive.

However, multi-day safaris significantly increase the chances of encountering one, especially in regions like Laikipia where sightings have been consistently reported.

Many travelers choose longer itineraries specifically to improve their odds.

How much does a black leopard safari cost?

Black leopard safaris are typically mid-range to high-end experiences, depending on accommodation and guiding.

Like most specialist safaris, these trips are usually priced as packages, and the total moves with season, lodge tier, group size, and what's bundled in (transfers, park or conservancy fees, private guiding, etc.). Treat headline prices online as a starting point, compare what's included line by line, then ask the operator for a current quote before you book.

Best time for a black leopard safari

Black leopard safaris in Laikipia are possible year-round, but drier months generally offer better tracking conditions and visibility.

Seasonal changes can influence animal movement, so experienced guides adjust daily plans accordingly.
